Two bowl barrows on Colaton Raleigh Common, 500m north and 780m north east of Woodbury Castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Two earth mounds still rise on Colaton Raleigh Common, set half a kilometre north and nearly eight hundred metres north east of Woodbury Castle. They are not a decorative feature or a forgotten mistake; the state has named them a scheduled monument because they belong to the oldest layered memory of East Devon. People may have walked past them for centuries, unsure whether they were dropping food, marking a boundary or simply avoiding the trouble of asking permission. The common has kept them visible while human certainty has blurred around them.
The National Heritage List for England records Two bowl barrows on Colaton Raleigh Common, 500m north and 780m north east of Woodbury Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
