What is recorded here
Half a mile east of the Huntington church, a broad circular mound still rises nine metres above its ditch at the foot of Hell Wood. A badger once tore open the ground there and exposed a thick wall foundation, revealing that a shell keep stood inside the earthworks before the nearby castle was built. The ridge itself formed the defence, leaving no need for separate flanking towers on either side.
The National Heritage List for England records Turret Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Turret Castle is a medieval hill fort, likely built during the Iron Age and later occupied in the Roman period. It is important as an example of ancient defensive earthworks and is protected as a scheduled monument due to its historical and archaeological significance.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
