Scotland's earliest railway, built to carry coal on wooden rails, using gravity and horse power. Fought across in the battle of Prestonpans in 1745.
Jacobite forces under Charles Edward Stuart defeated government troops under Sir John Cope at the Battle of Prestonpans in September 1745; the battle was significant as it marked an early Jacobite success in the 1745 uprising and boosted Highland support for the cause.
