This blue commemorative plaque records: Newport Town Hall Stood with its imposing clock tower on this site from 1842 to 1960. The office transferred to the new civic centre in 1950. Field-Marshall Sir Bernard Law Montgomery addressed the citizens from its gallery when granted the freedom of the town in 1945. Recorded plaque organisation: Newport Civic Society.
