William Julien Courtauld gave Braintree its Town Hall in 1928, completing a building whose foundation stone had been set two years earlier. The Renaissance clock tower still strikes each quarter-hour, while the figure above the bells carries the Courtauld motto, Hold to the Truth. That phrase turns a municipal landmark into a warning: even a generous gift requires the town to keep its own promises.
