Alexander Barclay raised Towie Barclay Castle in 1593 above an older fortress, giving Clan Barclay a rib-vaulted hall and a vestibule marked with St. Patrick Barclay's arms. Findlater stripped its turrets and drowned its ditch in 1792, yet the building reappeared in the 1970s with two new storeys and its hall made fit for life again. It is a castle that has been diminished, forgotten and rebuilt, which makes its surviving vault feel like a promise kept rather than a relic preserved.
