Mortal danger has worn this Northumberland earth for centuries. Medieval borders sharpened the tower into a knife-edge of stone, then wartime skies bent the same ground into a shelter for ordinary lives. The house and the hole beneath it are one continuous answer to fear, separated only by the years they waited.
