Tower

In pasture, atop knoll, c. 150m S of Stannard's Grove and Carrigdownane Castle (14329). Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as 'pillar'. Solid construction (H c. 8m) of random-rubble limestone, atop slight plinth. Square base (2.3m x 2.3m) rises to c. 3.5m, then tapers gradually with height; divided into three tiers by string courses; surmounted by octagonal pinnacle (see photograph in Grove White 1905-25, vol. 4, opp. 226). Stannard's Grove, c. 150m to N, indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map, though date plaque on house states built in 1904 by William Stackpoole; rebuilt 1924 after being blown up in 1921. Two-storey, 7-bay, gable-ended house. Piered entrance sweep to W, with roughly inscribed date of '1842'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
