Tonbridge Castle Gatehouse rose between 1230 and 1260 as a sandstone box with four corner towers, forcing every cart through a narrow throat where hot liquid could rain from three holes in the arch. It still stands beside the Medway, its portcullis groove and loop lights preserving the violence of that design. The castle around it has mostly vanished into council offices, gardens and memory, but the gatehouse keeps its shape like a locked jaw, waiting for traffic that never comes.
