Inistioge still holds the chest tomb of Peter Joyce, carved around 1580 with a salmon, a floriated cross and IHS. The Augustinian Priory kept his name in Latin letters long after the priory itself changed hands. A man buried beneath stone in a chapel of ladies may have been a cleric, a donor or a forgotten local nobleman, but the craftsman believed his death deserved more than a shallow cut. The salmon still swims across the marble, unafraid of time.

In the Lady Chapel at the Augustinian Priory (KK032-017004-) in Inistioge. The upper part of a chest tomb with a floriated raised cross, a salmon in relief and ‘IHS’. The Latin inscription, in Black Letter, runs around the edge and commemorates Peter Joyce. The slab dates to c. 1580.
