Tolendal Castle

Meltwater carved the esker ridge, and human hands placed a castle upon that ancient sculpture. Tolendal Castle rose west of an old field system in County Galway, commanding a broad view and probably guarding the labour that sustained it. Time has erased much of its form, leaving an eleven-metre depression and scattered rubble, yet the choice of height remains plain. The land still remembers the shape of power even when the walls have forgotten their own name.
