Todcastles

Burnt Mound (prehistoric)

What is recorded here

Todcastles is a prehistoric burnt mound in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, where ancient heat transformed stone and soil into a dark marker of human presence. It may have marked a boundary, fed a ritual bath, or simply raged against the local rain. The land remembers that fire even when every human witness has vanished.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Todcastles as Burnt Mound (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
