Tobernavannia (Site of) — Report the wrong picture

Tobernavannia was a holy well in Oughterard, County Galway, but even its memory has faded. It sat between Main Street and the Owenriff River, marked on early maps before disappearing entirely. No stone, ditch or trace remains to show where water once rose for prayer. The land keeps the shape of the hole, but the hole itself has gone.

Between Main St, Oughterard, to S and Owenriff River to N. This well was indicated on 1st ed. of OS but was evidently gone by time of 2nd ed. (1899), when the words 'Site of' were appended. Tobernavannia is associated with Saint Vannia, a 5th-century Irish saint known for her asceticism and healing miracles. The well was traditionally visited for cures related to eye ailments and general infirmities, with pilgrimages often involving ritual washing or drinking of the water.
