Toberfailia Holy Well

Holy well

What is recorded here

Toberfailia Holy Well in County Clare is a ritual site where clean water still rises through ancient stone. People may have knelt at its edge to ask for healing, mark a birthday or quiet a fear before leaving a small offering behind. The well does not need a grand legend because it preserves the simple human act of asking another living thing for help.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV). Toberfailia Holy Well is traditionally associated with Saint Failge, a 7th-century Irish monk and hermit known for his ascetic practices and healing miracles. The well is believed to have curative properties, particularly for eye ailments, and was historically visited as part of a pilgrimage tradition involving prayer and the collection of water.
