Why this matters

People and events
Clan Maclean and later Campbell estates controlled land, while tenants experienced rent change, migration and croft reform. A large Royal Air Force station built during the Second World War brought runways and outside workers.
How it was used
Families raised cattle, grew crops, fished and cut turf, using traditional blackhouses and later white houses. The airfield became the island airport, while strong winds now support surfing and renewable power.
What survives
Machair fields, crofts, blackhouse ruins, chapels, standing stones, radar remains and airport runways survive. Gaelic continues in speech, song and place names.
Why it mattered
Tiree shows how a fragile sandy landscape can support an enduring community through careful farming. Wartime building and modern travel changed access without erasing the island's Gaelic character.
