Tillycairn Castle is a four-storey tower house in Aberdeenshire, built circa 1550 for Matthew Lumsden and abandoned in the 1720s. Its L-plan, rounded corners, angle turrets and gun-loops reveal a home designed for both display and defence. The basement kitchen, vaulted hall and concealed stair suggest a busy household where service, status and secrecy shared the same stones.
