Thornton Castle, East Lodge

East Lodge still stands beside Thornton Castle in Aberdeenshire, though no date or purpose has survived to explain why it was built. The main castle took the glory while the smaller lodge waited outside the boundary, perhaps housing a keeper, a guest, or a guard who never entered the grand chamber. That exclusion is not a flaw but a clue: important places often contain forgotten rooms where ordinary people lived, watched, or were kept away.
