Thomas Hovenden was born in Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland on December 28, 1840. He lost his parents during the potato famine at age six, entered an orphanage, and later studied at the Cork School of Design before emigrating to the United States in 1863. His painting of peasant life in Brittany brought him world-wide fame, carrying the memory of a small Cork town across oceans.
