Thomas Francis Gilroy was born in County Sligo, Ireland, on June 3, 1840, before crossing the ocean to become a New York mayor. He left that coastal world behind at seven, entered publishing, and climbed through Tammany Hall until he managed Hugh J. Grant's campaign. His mayoral year arrived during the Lexow Committee's exposure of police corruption, after which he stepped aside rather than continue the fight.
