This green commemorative plaque records: The East Grinstead Martyrs. Thomas Dungate, John Forman, Ann Tree were burned to death on 18th July 1556 in the High Street, for refusal to renounce their Protestant faith. Recorded plaque organisation: East Grinstead Town Council.
Thomas Dungate, John Forman, and Ann Tree were Protestants executed during the Marian Persecutions under Queen Mary I; they are remembered as martyrs for their refusal to abandon their religious beliefs.
