Thomas Butler, 6th Earl of Ossory, was born on 8 July 1634 at Kilkenny Castle, the eldest son of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond. He predeceased his father and never became duke, but he served as a soldier and politician, fighting in the Second Anglo-Dutch War and the Third Anglo-Dutch War. He died in London on 30 July 1680, leaving behind eleven children, including James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde.
