This brown commemorative plaque records: Thomas Brassey 1805-1870. Born: Buerton by Chester. Engineer. 'the most important civil engineering contractor in the world during the nineteenth century'. Built some 2061 miles of railway in Britain and 4462 miles overseas plus other major construction contracts including harbours, warehouses, clocks, waterworks and drainage systems. Built Chester General Station - opened 1848.
Thomas Brassey was a prominent 19th-century civil engineering contractor who significantly contributed to global railway expansion, constructing thousands of miles of railways both in Britain and overseas, including the Chester General Station which opened in 1848.
