This blue commemorative plaque records: Ryhope Village. This once rural settlement can be traced back to 930AD when it was recovered from the Scots by the Saxon King Athelstan. It was evolved as a 3-row village about a triangular green and was once popular with the Bishops of Durham for sea bathing. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Sunderland.

King Æthelstan, who ruled from 924 to 939 AD, was the first king to unite the kingdoms of England and is remembered for his military victories against Scots and Vikings, including recovering territories like Ryhope.
