This commemorative plaque records: This house dates from the late 18th century when it was built as an inn, "The Wynnstay Arms" (later "Cross Foxes"), by Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn , allegedly for electioneering purposes, when the rival houses of Powis and Wynnstay were fighting for political representation of the County of Montgomery
Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn was a prominent Welsh landowner and politician who significantly influenced local politics; he built The Wynnstay Arms in the late 18th century to support his political ambitions during the rivalry between the Powis and Wynnstay families for representation in Montgomery County.
