This blue commemorative plaque records: THE SHAMBLES Built in 1811 by the Duke of Devonshire for butchers shops, each was let for three guineas a year. In 1888 it was converted into an open market which sold poultry and dairy produce. At the beginning of the Great War these shambles were used for miniature rifle practice. Recorded plaque organisation: Wetherby Civic Society.
The Shambles in Wetherby, built in 1811 as butchers' shops by the Duke of Devonshire, later served as an open market and during World War I was utilized for military training purposes, reflecting its adaptive use over time.
