The Sad Castle is a stone monument in Northumberland bearing a poem by Felicity Lance, chosen by Ted Hughes to win a national Young Writers' Competition in 1997. David Edwick carved her words into the surface, turning a classroom voice into a permanent landmark. The castle remains sad because it is made of memory, shape and age rather than warning or joy.

'The Sad Castle' by Felicity Lance, a pupil of Harbottle School, was chosen by the late Ted Hughes, the former Poet Laureate, to win a national Young Writers' Competition in 1997. Her poem has been carved into stone by stonemason, David Edwick.
