Cretingsbury is a Norman motte castle transformed into a vast moated manor for Sir Adam de Creting, who died in 1294. Its rectangular earthworks stretch six hundred and fifty feet across high ground, surrounding a central mound still ringed by wet ditches. The site retains its defensive shape, though cart paths and farm buildings have cut through the ancient banks.
