Seven hundred metres west of Mayfield Heath Farm, a raised mound and surrounding ditch still break the flat Huntingdonshire earth. Built in the Norman period as a motte and bailey castle, it was a small violent instrument: a place to see far, keep close, and answer force with force. The names and records have thinned, but the shape remains. Under foot is a room without walls, waiting to be walked.
