The de Gresley family raised a circular earthen castle at The Manwar Ings in the 12th century, placing it beside Swineshead Abbey as a matching expression of local power. Its broad dry moats and levelled motte still cut through modern fields, preserving the shape of a residence that may have hosted feasts, arguments and quiet administrative work before it fell from use. The earth remembers the weight of human choice even when the wooden halls and stone foundations have vanished.
