The Liss was a small fort and castle motte a quarter mile NE of Ardee in low-lying County Louth ground. Tempest wrote in 1952 that the mound had already been levelled about a hundred years before, so its shape may have vanished before most people ever walked past it. It still belongs to the land: a lost ridge in wet fields, perhaps marked only by a change in soil, memory or the way water moves at dusk.

Situated in low-lying ground, the site consisted of a mound similar to Castleguard Motte (Dawson's Demesne, LH017-012001-) according to Tempest (1952b, part III, 147) who said that it was levelled about one hundered years before he remarked on it. It is also referred to in the OS Letters as being a small fort called 'the Liss' about a quarter of a mile NE of Ardee (Anon. 1922, 137). The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991).
