The 'graig wen' which gives this hill its name

Roughly 200–300 metres in height, the hill derives its name from the Welsh *craig wen*, meaning "red rock," likely referring to outcrops of iron-rich sandstone or volcanic rock. Such features are common in the geology of north Wales, and the name may also reflect local folklore or historical associations with prominent landmarks in the landscape.
