The Castle Keep is the oldest surviving building in Newcastle, a Norman tower completed in 1177 for Henry II on the exact spot where Robert Curthose first raised a wooden castle in 1080. It stands beside the Black Gate as a memorial to the fortress that gave the city its name, while the railway viaduct now cuts the gap between them like a modern scar. The stone tower has watched the Tyne bridge, the Roman fort, and every later city grow around it, making the keep the root beneath all of Newcastle's layers.
