The Castle at Castle Eden is a Grade II* listed mansion built around 1765 by Rowland Burdon III, who bought the ruined estate in 1758 and replaced the lost medieval site with a three-storey Palladian house. Its seven-bay front, canted central bays and castellated parapet still mark the property as a local landmark, while later additions such as the palmhouse and north wing show the family kept shaping the home for generations. The house may have felt less like a grand mansion and more like a working Burdon residence, where farming, politics and domestic life all moved through the same rooms.
