This black commemorative plaque records: The Bourtree. These licensed premises are named after the bourtrees (or elder trees) that stood in Bourtree Place and gave the street its name. The building is the former Conservative Club. The foundation stone was laid by Margaret Countess of Dalkeith, using a silver trowel, on 6th October 1897. The half-acre site had been purchased from her father-in-law the Duke of Buccleuch.
The Bourtree, formerly a Conservative Club in Hawick, commemorates the bourtrees (elder trees) that once stood in Bourtree Place; its foundation stone was laid by Margaret Countess of Dalkeith in 1897 on land purchased from her father-in-law, the Duke of Buccleuch.
