This bronze commemorative plaque records: Orbiston Babylon. The Babylon Community - Orbiston (1825 -1828) the first experiment in communal living in Britain. This stone pillar forming part of the Community Buildings and later erected at the entrance to Motherwell Inn at Motherwell Cross was gifted to the Town Council of the Burgh of Motherwell and Wishaw by T Allan Chambers, Esq of William Chambers and Sons Limited Motherwell
The Babylon Community at Orbiston (1825-1828) was Britain's first experiment in communal living, founded by Robert Owen to create a utopian society based on equality and cooperation. The community aimed to reform social structures but dissolved within three years due to internal conflicts and financial difficulties.
A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
