The Almshouses black plaque

This black commemorative plaque records: These Almshouses were built by the Guild of the Holy Cross in the early 15th Century, to provide homes for aged local people and this use has continued down to the present time. Following the suppression of the Guild, the Almshouses were granted by Charter in 1553, together with the Guild Chapel, Grammar School, and other properties to the newly incorporated Borough of Stratford-upon-Avon. They are now vested in the Trustees of the Municipal Charities and administered under a scheme made by the Charity Commission. The Almshouses were extensively renovated and modernised between June 1981 and January 1984, but much of the half timbered structure is original and the range of buildings has changed little in appearance over the Centuries.

The Almshouses, established by the Guild of the Holy Cross in the early 15th Century, have continuously provided housing for elderly locals and exemplify medieval charitable institutions' enduring legacy.
