Terringzean Castle stands as a stone ruin above the River Lugar in East Ayrshire, where a steep bank and dry moat once blocked approach to the summit. The Campbells of Loudoun built it circa 1696, yet an older vaulted tower with a wheel-stair still anchors the site. Hawthorn trees covered the knoll in the 1890s, and the whole place keeps the shape of a defended home rather than a grand palace.
