Taymouth Castle rose in 1842 when the Campbells of Breadalbane erased their own 1552 seat to build a neo-Gothic monument beside the River Tay. Francis Bernasconi shaped its central staircase, while Cornelius Dixon painted ceilings that still glow beneath medieval glass and Renaissance wood. The castle sat empty from 1982 until American owners rebuilt it into nine private suites, completing the work in November 2024.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Taymouth Castle as Axehead (stone)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Taymouth Castle was built in the 13th century by the Comyn family, a powerful noble lineage in medieval Scotland. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Scottish Wars of Independence and for its association with John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, a key figure in the conflict against Robert the Bruce.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
