Kenmore Gate stands before Taymouth Castle, a private address on the River Tay rather than a public invitation. The castle itself emerged in 1842 when John Campbell replaced the older Balloch Castle with a neo-Gothic palace large enough to carry medieval glass, Renaissance woodwork and Bernasconi’s four-storey staircase. After decades of decay and a failed hotel conversion, the completed 2024 clubhouse suit divided that grand house into nine occupied rooms, leaving the gate as the threshold between an ordinary road and a rebuilt private world.
