East Lodge stands at the front of Taymouth Castle, its gate piers and chamber built to mark the boundary between the castle lands and the outside world. The exact dates of its making have not been recorded, but the stones still perform their old job: they tell a traveller that the property begins here. Whether visitors passed through with permission or were turned away at those gates, the lodge controlled access to one of Perth and Kinross's most ambitious estates.
