Tanlawhill in Dumfries and Galloway held a medieval farmstead, kiln, quarry scoops and a 16th century tower house, marking it as a working estate rather than a passive field. Heat, stone and domestic life may have filled the same hill, with people moving material from quarry to kiln and sustaining a household through the years. The tower house suggests the arrangement outlasted ordinary farming and acquired a defensive or status role.
