This black commemorative plaque records: Dame Sybil Thorndike, actress, Freeman of The City Of Rochester, and her brother, Russell Thorndike, author, lived in this house from 1884 until 1892 when their father, the Rev. A J.W. Thorndike was a minor Canon at the Cathedral
Dame Sybil Thorndike was a renowned British actress known for her Shakespearean roles and as the first woman to appear in male roles at the Old Vic; she significantly contributed to the development of modern theatre in Britain.
