Strathmartine Castle vanished before Captain David Laird built his colonial farmhouse circa 1785, leaving no positive trace behind despite appearing on a 1678 map. Laird erected the two-storey house with twin bows on the forgotten castle site, improving the estate and building new cottages after his Royal Navy service. The original fortress remains a ghost in the stones, visible only through old drawings and the confident shape of the house that replaced it.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Strathmartine Castle as Building (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Strathmartine Castle was built by the Elphinstone family in the 15th century and later held by the Keiths. It is remembered as a historic seat associated with prominent Scottish noble families and as a ruin of architectural and historical interest in the Strathmartine area of Angus.
