North West Castle stands in Stranraer as a hotel, its rooms perhaps still warm from guests who watched ships leave the harbour. The building belongs to the living town rather than a dead museum, its walls holding ordinary joy instead of ancient fear. People may have danced, argued, loved or fled into the rain there, their names lost but their heat preserved in the wood and stone.
