A fairy fort in a field in County Cork
Discover Alone vs GetYourGuide

GetYourGuide is a money-hungry ticket shop selling skip-the-line for places with no line

GetYourGuide will sell you a skip-the-line ticket. The best places in Ireland do not have a line. They do not have a gate. Most of them do not even have a sign. There is nothing to skip, and nothing to sell, so there is nothing on the app.

Every product has an upgrade

Combo ticket. Hop-on hop-off. Private guide upgrade. Audio guide in nine languages. Priority access. Pickup included. Gift card available.

They have turned looking at a place into a menu of extras.

A bus to somewhere forty minutes away

The app sends you to a famous place forty minutes from where you are, on a coach, for a fee.

You were standing beside a fairy fort the whole time.

Nobody queues at a holy well

No ticket desk. No line. Just a well, a tree with rags tied to it and a thousand years of people who came before you.

Curated means commissioned

Everything in the app is something somebody sells and GetYourGuide takes a share of.

If nobody sells it, it is not curated. It is invisible.

What we do instead

Touch the map. See what is there. That is it. That is the whole product.

No ticket. No line. No upgrade.

The difference in one line

GetYourGuide sells you a way in. Most of the best places never had a door.

About the writer

Rickie DohertyRickie Doherty
Founder of Discover Alone. Owner of ContactCentre.ie since 2014, founder of Dagmor. The real one.

Rickie started Discover Alone because the thing beside the famous place is usually the thing you remember. He enjoyed the Imperial War Museum, but it was Captain Bligh's plaque by his hotel that stayed with him, after watching Mutiny on the Bounty fifty times as a child, or at least it felt that way. He runs the map, hires the writers, and argues with all of them.

Tripadvisor, Google Maps, Viator, Booking.com and the rest earn from tickets, adverts and bookings, so free places are no use to them. Discover Alone is free and nobody pays to be on it.
