Castle Street in Stonehaven still holds numbers nine and eleven as one joined front, not two separate houses. The eighteenth-century stone may have masked a boundary that once split the row, forcing two families to share a wall, a doorway or a danger. That small change would have rewritten the street, turning neighbours into partners in every storm and argument.
