Stone head (present location) in Unknown Townland

Stone head (present location)

What is recorded here

Ballydawley church in County Sligo lost its stone head to the National Museum of Ireland, stripping the ruins of a face they may have worn for centuries. The museum room is bright and guarded, but the churchyard remains exposed to rain and memory. A visitor can still stand where the head watched, imagining the weight of its gaze before men moved it into glass and safety.
A stone head from Ballydawley church, Co. Sligo (SL020-171001-) is housed in the National Museum of Ireland (pers. comm. Martin Timoney 1989). Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 24 June 2014
Likely dating to the early Christian period, the stone head may have originally formed part of a high cross or ecclesiastical sculpture, reflecting the artistic traditions of northwest Ireland. Its relocation to Ballydawley church suggests a possible liturgical or commemorative function in a medieval Christian context.
