Stephen Roche was born in Churchtown, County Dublin, Ireland, on November 28, 1959, entering a world where cycling remained a niche pursuit overshadowed by Gaelic football and hurling. He took up the sport at twelve, inspired by his uncle, and by sixteen his talent was undeniable. In 1987, he completed the Triple Crown, winning the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and World Road Race Championship in a single season. His victories proved that a rider from a small, cycling-ambivalent nation could stand among the all-time greats.
