Boyd was born William Millar on 4 July 1931 in Whitehouse, County Antrim, the youngest of nine children raised Presbyterian before moving to Glengormley. He quit school at fourteen to earn money, learned theatre behind the scenes in Belfast, and at nineteen toured Canada with summer stock companies. In 1950 he crossed America with the Clare Tree Major Company, playing Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, a performance he later called the best of his life.
