What is recorded here
Donegal’s Speenoge still holds a leaning stone, one metre high and wider at the base than a person is tall. It stands on a boggy ridge, tilted east as if listening for something that no longer speaks. People may have set it there to mark a boundary, honour a dead person or watch the season change, but the moss and rain have erased the reason. What remains is a stone large enough to touch, old enough to baffle, and proud enough to keep its own counsel.
A standing stone, leaning to E, and c. 1m high × 1.4m wide at base × 0.27m thick; N-S. Situated in boggy terrain on the crest of a ridge.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
